The Future Tense. "Will" often suggests that a speaker will do something voluntarily. A voluntary action is one the speaker offers to do for someone else. EXAMPLES: A: I'm really hungry. B:I'll make some sandwiches. A: I'm so tired. I'm about to fall asleep. B: I'll get you some coffee.

  1. The Future Tense "Will" often suggests that a speaker will do something voluntarily. A voluntary action is one the speaker offers to do for someone else. EXAMPLES: A: I'm really hungry. B:I'll make some sandwiches. A: I'm so tired. I'm about to fall asleep. B: I'll get you some coffee.

  2. "Will" to Express a Promise • "Will" is usually used in promises • EXAMPLES: • I will call you when I arrive. • I promise I will not tell him about the surprise party. • You shouldn’t play football. • I promise I will not play football.

  3. "Be going to" to Express a Plan • "Be going to" expresses that something is a plan. • EXAMPLES: • He is going to play football in school. • A: Who is going to make John's birthday cake. • B: Sue is going to make John's birthday cake.

  4. "Will" or "Be Going to" to Express a Prediction • Both "will" and "be going to" can express the idea of a general prediction about the future. • EXAMPLES: • The year 2003 will be a very interesting year. • The year 2003 is going to be a very interesting year. • It will rain. • It's going to rain.

  5. Times: • Tomorrow • Next • next week • later • soon • in a few minutes

  6. Grammar • Positive(will): S+Will+V1+Obj. • I will take an aspirin. • He will go to cinema. • Negative(will): S+Won’t+V1+Obj. I won't call you again. They won't come to Turkey this year, they haven't got enough money.

  7. Question(Will): Will+S+V1+Obj. Will you use computer. Yes, I will. No. I won’t. Will Can buy a jacket for him? Will the teacher leave as soon?

  8. Positive(going to): S+am\is\are+V1 I am going to buy a toy next week. I am going to play tennis tomorrow. Negative(going to): S+am\is\are not+V1 I am not going to learn Japanese next year. He isn't going to ask question.

  9. Question(going to): Am\is\are+S+going to+V1 Are you going to play basketball this year? Is the teacher going to give a test next lesson? Is he going to play football with friends tomorrow?

  10. Exercise: • I will go to Italy. • I will bring you an asprin. • I will open the door. • I am going to eat lunch at 12:30 this afternoon. • She is going to watch the film on the TV after she finishes her homework.
