4. Cause of the Blizzard An unusual convergence of two atmospheric low pressure systems caused this horrible blizzard
It resulted in a storm of unprecedented magnitude
The National Weather Service categorized it a as rare severe blizzard, the most severe grade of winter storm
5. Ohio- The First Storm The first storm somewhat avoided Ohio, mainly targeting the Northeast
From January 19 to 21, twenty-one inches of snow fell in parts of this region
This was a 48 hour record for this amount of snowfall
6. O-H-I-O!- Second Storm Between January 25 and 27, the second storm found Ohio directly in its path
Winds gusting up to 100 mph caused snow drifts that nearly covered entire homes
Some of these snow drifts were as deep as 25 feet
Wind chills reached below 60 degrees Fahrenheit
7. Ohio Thousands of people were stranded in their cars and homes
For the first time in its history, the Ohio Turnpike closed due to the severity of the blizzard
One semi-truck driver was buried by a snow drift and was not found for a week
8. Ohio Over 5,000 members of the Ohio National Guard were called in to make numerous rescues
Police asked citizens who had four-wheel drive vehicles and snowmobiles to transport doctors to the hospital
Many homes and businesses lost electricity and heat
As the storm move eastward, warmer temperatures converted the snow to ice
9. Ohio- All in All Over 70 people died from this storm, 51 of which were from Ohio
People died as a direct or indirect result of the storm
At least one person died of exposure in a stranded automobile
Must people died from traffic accidents or heart attacks
10. The Third Storm The final storm targeted the Northeastern coastline of the United States
Occurred during the second week of February
One to three of snow fell during this final stage of the blizzard
