  2. Getting Started with the Pilot The project was funded by the MACS foundation and money from the CCHS budget Each classroom has a set of 25 Ipads 25 MacBooks are shared between the two classes The Pilot launched the project on Wednesday, January 26 with an iPad assignment on Puerto Rico
  3. Our Hopes Build 21st century learners who are comfortable using technology Create assignments that use rich resources videos, podcasts, primary source documents, etc. Increase student responsibility for their own learning Increase student engagement Increase students’ critical thinking skills Increase collaboration in the classroom
  4. Initial Successes Initial infatuation with the devices caused students to be extremely engaged Less need to “police” students from playing games, messaging each other, etc. than we thought Student feedback: “The class goes by so fast when we use the iPads” Interest of fellow faculty and administrators We have a lot of teachers and administrators visit our room to view the project in action We have completely abandoned using the textbook Both devices allow students to access much wider sources than just their textbook

Initial Challenges File management on the Ipad Some of the novelty of the devices has worn off students are realizing that there is a lot of work involved with using the devices Students share devices & can’t take them home Students lose work because they do not save it properly, save old copies over new ones, etc. Tough to assign homework b/c of Mac compatibility issues Desk make it difficult for students to collaborate having desks Keeping devices charged is a housekeeping issue

Sample Units World War I Unit An introduction to iWorks Students were familiarized with Pages and Keynote An exploration of over 15 primary source documents newspapers, a telegram, declarations, propaganda posters & video, acts of congress, and a treaty Because of this familiarization with primary sources, we felt comfortable including an essay on the test that included the analyzing of primary source materials
  7. Sample Units The Roaring 20s Unit An introduction to using songs, videos, and other resources to help gain knowledge and define an era Students created a movie on Calvin Coolidge using iMovie

Sample Units The Great Depression Unit The use of a podcast on the Great Depression (listened to on the ipad) The use of iTunes University for a video by a professor on the causes of the Great Depression (listened to on the ipad) The use of a webquest on the Dust Bowl Students used their gained knowledge to decide if the New Deal was a success or a failure in ending the Depression Students wrote an essay on a mock scenario of someone who lived in the Great Depression Students were expected to explain what New Deal agencies would have helped them in their situation

Sample Units World War II Unit The World War II Unit focuses on the analyzing of primary sources Students reviewed over TWENTY primary source documents, including: The Neutrality Acts Hitler’s Address to Germany on the invasion of Poland The Non Aggression Pact FDR’s fireside chat on the U.S.S. Greer FDR’s “Day in Infamy” speech The Selective Service Act of 1940 A WAAC Promotional Video Eisenhower’s letter to troops prior to D-day Korematsu v. the United States Also used Quizlet.com to create flashcards

Future Units Post War American and the Cold War The New Frontier and the Great Society (includes imbedded video and a collaborative video project using iMovie) Civil Rights (includes a collaborative project using iPhoto to create a calendar) Vietnam and the 1960s Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan The 1990s and the New Millennium

What we’ve learned Have everything in place before you start 100% reliable network Device management plan Storage, charging, etc. Printer (?) that is Apple combatable Necessary support staff Do as much professional development as possible Focus on classroom planning, not software Have teachers work in pairs (maybe threes) to develop lessons
  13. What we’ve learned Find a balance between projects, lectures, and individual work in the classroom Students are very adept at learning software, not so much at file management The MacBook is a great device for accessing information and creating The iPad is a great device for accessing information (at ½ the price!) We can teach without a textbook, but some students still like the security of the textbook Perhaps E-books in the future
