Reading in the classroom • Reading in the classroom takes place at several times and in various ways in the kindergarten classroom. • There are four parts to our daily reading instruction.
Reading to students • Read Aloud – To model and share enthusiasm for reading and to expose students to rich, quality literature, think aloud, develop vocabulary. Students are actively engaged listening and responding to the text.
Reading With Students • Shared Reading Teacher reads the text with students joining in. Students are engaged in discussion and learning opportunities focused on comprehension. Vocabulary and Word Work are developed.
Reading With Students • Small Group Instruction To provide explicit instruction and an opportunity to practice strategies taught in Shared Reading with text/ practice matched to students’ needs. Students are listening and responding with teacher prompting.
Guided Reading • Small groups working with the teacher on reading skills. • These skills include: Letters & sounds Applying Letters & Sounds in Writing Phonemic Awareness Guided Reading Other Student Needs
Independent Reading • To practice strategies taught in Shared Reading and Small Group Instruction on “Just Right” books. Students are quietly involved with books. Students are “reading” and engaged with the text and pictures.
Guided reading • Tonight we are looking at the different parts of the guided reading lesson. Each part is important and has a different purpose. • We will look at what happens in the classroom and how you can help support the work at home. • We will get some materials ready to extend their learning with you at home!
Efficient reading has many underlying skills • See lines and shapes on a page • Identify as letters or word • Recognizes words • Automatically processes familiar words • Scans vocabulary • Grasps meaning • Assigns imagery • Evaluates context • Comprehends specific meaning • Moves on to next word AMPS: A Journal of Cognitive Skills for Educators
Parts of the guided readinglessons • Sentence work /writing a sentence with limited teacher prompting for conventions and spelling. • Reading talk about strategies. • Independent reading with teacher support. • Strategy instruction on specific skills. • Word work. • Running record.
Where we are working! • See lines and shapes on a page. • Identify as letters or word. • Recognizes words. What if they don’t recognize a word?
Analyzing and Decoding • The child uses his recognition of letters and their sounds and tries to blend together the sounds. • This takes practice! Push it! Say it!
What if they can’t sound out the word or don’t recognize the word? Strategies!
How can we increase the words that they recognize? • Nifty Fifty! • Make and break words • Word families • Write around the House!
Guided reading homework • Scrambled sentences. Affix correctly assembled sentence into notebook. • Draw a picture to illustrate sentence. • Child reads book to parents, sibling, baby sitters. • Record book and date. • Repack folder/bag and send it back to school.
What else can we do? • Sight word games • Alphabet games • Word work • Writing activities • READ, READ, READ!
But the most important thing you can do? Read! Read! Read!
