Augustana College Plan for a Interdiscisplinary Environment PKAL, Madison, Oct 28-30, 2005 Bengtson, Ghinazzi & Trotter
Our Vision Faculty in the STEM departments at Augustana will be fully integrated into the general education (AGES) program.
Goal #1 To increase the number of first year liberal studies (LS) courses offered by STEM faculty by 2 per year to a total of 15.
Goal #2 Establish learning communities (LC) among the STEM disciplines (3-4) and between STEM departments and departments outside of STEM (3-4).
Strategies • Solicit and maintain the support of the administration. • Promote the importance of both disciplinary and interdisciplinary teaching. • During the hiring process express the importance of STEM involvement in LS and LC courses. • Value LS and LC teaching during the promotion and tenure process.
Agenda for Action – Short term • Sell the plan! • Convey to the faculty that resources are already being provided. • Review the LS and LC programs for STEM faculty.
Agenda for Action – Long Term • Brown bag support groups. • STEM involvement in college-wide LS and LC planning. • Faculty development workshops. • Interdisciplinary seminars.
