Chapter 1Themes of Biology • What is Biology? “Bio” means life; “logos” means the study of What are other subjects that end in the suffix –logy? What are their meanings?
Living Things Have Certain Characteristics in Common • Cellular Organization- All living things are made of one (unicellular) or more (multicellular) cells. Cells are the smallest unit capable of all life functions. Your body contains more than 100 trillion cells! Single-celled organism Called a Paramecium
2. Reproduction- All living things can reproduce. A species must be able to produce more organisms like themselves to continue.
3. Living things obtain and use materials and energy. Metabolism- All of the chemical reactions carried out in an organism to produce energy. • Almost all the energy used by living organisms is captured from sunlight.
4. Living things maintain a stable internal environment. Homeostasis- The ability to stay the same on the inside despite of changes in the surrounding environment. How do humans maintain a constant body temperature?
5. Living things are based on a universal genetic code. Heredity- The passing of traits from parent to offspring. Heredity explains why children tend to resemble their parents. Widow’s peak Hitchhiker’s thumb
6. As a group, living things change over time. Evolution- Change in traits of species over time. Charles Darwin, British naturalist, defined the process in which organisms with favorable genes are more likely to survive & reproduce (natural selection). Galapago’s Islands
7. Living things respond to their environment. Organisms detect and respond to stimuli from their environment.
8. Growth & Development: Every organism has a particular pattern of growth and development.
