Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. Freedom of Speech, Press, Religion, and Petition This right shows that your Religion should never be judged by anyone and you can be any Religion you want to be. It also states that you can fight for what you believe in if you don’t believe what the government says. You may state you opinion and defend for what you think is right. The last thing it tells you is to do it in a peaceful way. Example: People have been fighting against the government for health care. Allie Stewart

  3. A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed. Right To Keep and Bear Arms T he Second Amendment tells you that if you are a free state and people from other states/country do something you don’t like you have the right to use your army. It also tells you that people have the right to carry any weapon for defense. The overall statement this right shows is that you have the right to defend yourself Example: You can defend yourself if someone breaks into your house. Allie Stewart

  4. No soldier shall, in time of peace be quartered in any house, without the consent of the owner, nor in time of war, but in a manner to be prescribed by law. Conditions for Quarts of Soldiers This Amendment shows that if a Soldier needs a place to sleep or stay while not in war you do not have to let them stay in your house. The only time you should let them stay in your house is for when there is a war going on. It also says that even if there is war going on and congress didn’t say you had to let them live in your house you may not let them stay there. Example: When soldier come home and need a place to stay you don’t need have to let them in. Allie Stewart

The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized. Right of Search and Seizure regulated This amendment shows that if you have to go in front of a judge no one has the right to search your body if you can prove you did not commit the crime. It also means that they can not search your house or belongs until they have found out that you are guilty. Example: If someone says they saw you doing something and you say you didn’t if you can defend your case then they will not have the right to search you. Allie Stewart

No person shall be held to answer for a capital, or otherwise infamous crime, unless on a presentment or indictment of a Grand Jury, except in cases arising in the land or naval forces, or in the militia, when in actual service in time of war or public danger; nor shall any person be subject for the same offense to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb; nor shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself, nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use without just compensation. Provisions Concerning Prosecution This shows Amendment shows that if you were convicted of a crime (a serious crime) they can not make any decisions to put you in jail or kill you. You have to sit in front of a jury and you don’t even have to speak but if they jury finds that you are not guilty. The Government can not hold another trial against you. If you are found guilty they are not allowed to take any of your belongings unless they want to pay to have them taken away. Example: The trial where they found the lady not guilty of killing her daughter there were no more trials because the jury decided that she was not guilty. Allie Stewart

In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury of the State and district wherein the crime shall have been committed, which district shall have been previously ascertained by law, and to be informed of the nature and cause of the accusation; to be confronted with the witnesses against him; to have compulsory process for obtaining witnesses in his favor, and to have the assistance of counsel for his defense. Right to a Speedy Trial, witness, etc. This Bill of Right shows that when you do a crime you can have the trial go as speedy as you want, but that is only if you are going to do it in front of a public jury. The trial can be held where the crime was committed. This way there will be a witness held against you that saw you do the crime. Example: If someone committed a crime here in our town we would have the right to have a public trial where there was a witness to see the crime being committed. Then it would be a speedy trial. In suits at common law, where the value in controversy shall exceed twenty dollars, the right of trial by jury shall be preserved, and no fact tried by a jury shall be otherwise re-examined in any court of the United States, than according to the rules of the common law. Right to a Trial by Jury This Bill of Right shows that if you have been committed in a crime with two people you may choose to do a jury court. This means that the government will not be included in this trial. This shows that it was only between you two and has nothing to do with the government,. Example: If you accused someone of stealing your car you could go to a jury trial which doesn’t involve the government because that crime was between two people. Allie Stewart

  9. Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted. Excessive Bail, Cruel Punishment This Bill of Right shows that if you have committed a crime or damaged something the government can make you pay more then what you can afford. If you can not pay for the damage they are not allowed to make you or have you involved in any cruel punishments. The government has to be reasonable even if you are convicted of a crime. Example: If you have damaged something and you do not have enough money to pay for it the government has to work out a deal with you. Allie Stewart

  10. The enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people. Rule of Construction of Constitution This right shows that you have other rights far behind just the Bill of Rights. If you are doing something that is not listed on the Bill of Rights does not mean you are doing anything wrong. Example: Not everything you are allowed to do it listed in the Bill of Rights.   11. The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people. Rights of the States under Constitution This right shows that things that are done outside of the Bill of Rights that are done are to be decided upon the states and congress. Things that you think are right can be deiced upon the people. The choice is mostly up to you and the people. Example: If you think that something should be done it is your choice and the peoples.   12. The Bill of Rights The Bill of Rights is so important because with out we wouldn’t know all the rights that we have with our government. One thing you should know about the Bill of Rights is that just because everything is not stated in here that you can do doesn’t mean you can not fight for what you think is right. In this slide show I have listed only the first ten amendments , there are so many more. I hope this gave and taught you more about the Bill of Rights. Allie Stewart
