A Unified Approach to Mainstreaming Equality and Diversity Chris Bradshaw Equality and Diversity Coordinator University of the West of Scotland
Aim To describe and discuss an approach to mainstreaming and embedding equality and diversity in an HEI
UWS Approach – to August 2009 • Structure • Strategy • Equality Schemes • Impact Assessment • Networking
UWS Approach – From August 2009 • Single Scheme - but not for long • Strategic and Business Planning • HR processes • Job descriptions • PDR and PDP • Improved internal communication • Student and staff engagement • Strategic and operational networking
Culture Change process • Equality Coordinator coordinates....others do! • Senior managers’ roles and responsibilities • Moving beyond compliance • This is not a “bolt on” • How many “get it”? • How do we deal with those who don’t “get it”?
Challenges • Public sector cuts • Focus on legislation • Making it real for: • Principal’s team and other managers • Finance • Academics • Students • Support Departments
Solutions • Business case argument • Aka “if you think equality is expensive, try inequality” • Stop talking about schemes and plans and focus on student centred outcomes • Hearts and minds but not Nixon approach • Academic excellence exists in curricula design...we just need to find it, encourage it and communicate it • Students can be engaged through coursework and projects/dissertations/theses • Support departments need to see relevance – estates/ICT are crucial
