Assessing the First Spouse’s (FS) interest in the topic of Underage Drinking (UAD) Prevention • Did the Governor run on a platform that includes alcohol-related problems in general (e.g., Health Care Reform, Crime, etc.)? • Is the FS aware of the UAD problem in the State? • Does the FS have a professional or personal interest in UAD? • Does the FS have other topics of interest that might be related (e.g., Domestic Violence, etc.)? • Who is the FS’s Administrative Assistant? What are his/her interests? • Is the First Spouse a parent? If so, how old are the kids?
Planning the approach/invitation for UAD Prevention involvement. • Which agency is the “go to” agency on alcohol-related problems? UAD? • Who should approach the First Spouse? Cabinet Secretary, Admin. Asst., NPN/SSA Director, MD, Friend, Youth, MADD, Other? • What is the “ask” (e.g., to become the State’s spokesperson on the topic/do public speaking regarding the problems vs. introducing the US Surgeon General/sponsoring a reception)? Think about a level of involvement, starting slow and seeing how that works. Stack for success!
General Guidelines • Don’t assume anything. • Work closely with FS Admin. Assistant/Chief of Staff. • Be patient; helpful; truthful; and trustworthy. • Keep requests related to the topic (UAD). • Know your stuff (stats, facts, who’s who, etc.). • Get approval as needed to communicate. • Alert FS whether something might be controversial. • Realize that the FS is a public figure and stack the deck for his/her success. • Prepare to represent FS at events; also write speeches. • Remember: You are working with the FS, the person married to the Governor.
