Mid 1800s • 1851- Fort Laramie treaties were signed with the Plains tribes outlining their territories and outlining passages through territories for settlers in exchange for payments to the tribes. • 1855 - The Nez Perce sign an agreement with the U.S. Government which would later be rescinded when gold was discovered on the Nez Perce land.
Late 1800s • 1862 - The Homestead Act is passed by the U.S. government opening Indian land in the Midwest to settlers. • 1864 - Sand Creek Massacre takes place under US Cavalry led by Colonel John Chivington when he slaughters at least 150 Cheyenne and Arapaho http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U0UF71_-HZY
Late 1800s • 1876 - George Custer and the U.S. Army is soundly defeated at the Battle of Little Big Horn by Native Americans led by Sitting Bull in Custer’s Last Stand. • 1887 - Congress enacts the Dawes Act which carves existing Indians’ lands into 160 acre parcels to be distributed to individual Native American heads of households. • 1890 - The Wounded Knee Massacre takes place in South Dakota. Two hundred Native American women and children are killed.
