  1. Comenius project In this powerpoint presentation we would like to present the most famous sights of 4 countries, which take part in the Comenius project. You will learn about the history, the geography and the people who live in these countries. In this presentation there is a quiz game and we wonder if you can answer the questions. Are you ready?   5. Istambul • Istanbul historically known as Byzantium and Constantinople, is the largest city of Turkey. Istanbul metropolitan province had 13.26 million people living in it as of December, 2010, which is 18% of Turkey's population and the 3rd largest metropolitan area in Europe after London and Moscow. The city in its administrative limits had 8.8 million residents counted in the latest Turkish census from 2000. Istanbul is a megacity, as well as the cultural, economic, and financial centre of Turkey. It is located on the Bosphorus Strait and encompasses the natural harbour known as the Golden Horn, in the northwest of the country. It extends both on the European and on the Asian sides of the Bosphorus, and is thereby the only metropolis in the world that is situated on two continents. Istanbul is a designated alpha world city.

  6. Hagia Sophia • Hagia Sophia is an Orthodox patriarchal basilica, and now a museum in Istanbul • From the date of it’s dedication it served as the Greek Patriarchal cathedral of Constantinople • The building was a mosque from May 1453 until 1931 • It was opened as a museum on 1 February 1935.

  7. Galata tower & Suleymaniye Bath • The nine-story tower is 66.90 meters tall, and was the city's tallest structure when it was built. The elevation at ground level is 35 meters above sea-level. • It was built in 1557 by great architect Sinan as a part of Suleymaniye Mosque Complex. It's located at Suleymaniye district and used for tourism purposes mostly.

  8. Olympus • Though a very ancient city nearby Antalya, in the Mediterranean coast of Anatolia, the early history of Olympus is shrouded in mystery. Its name is probabily derived from Olympos (Tahtali) mountain about 15 km north of the city. We know it was an important Lycian city by the 2nd century B.C. because Strabon mentioned that Olympos had 3 votes in the Lycian League. The Olympians worshipped Hephaestos (Vulcan), the god of fire. No doubt this veneration sprang from reverence for the mysterious site of Chimeira, an eternal flame which still springs from the earth not far from the city. The town declined in the 1st century B.C. when it was controlled by the pirates, until the arrival of the Romans in the 2nd century A.D. In the 3rd century pirate attacks brought impoverishment. In the Middle Ages, Venetians, Genoese and Rhodians built fortresses along the coast. And finally by the 15th century Olympus had been abandoned after the arrival of the Ottomans.

  9. Spain • Spain, officially the Kingdom of Spain is a country and member state of the European Union • It’s mainland is bordered to the south and east by the Mediterranean Sea • To the north by France,Andorra, and the Bay of Biscay • To the northwest and west by the Atlantic Ocean and Portugal

Poland • The History of Poland is rooted in the arrival of the Slavs • During the Piast dynasty Christianity was adopted in 966 and medieval monarchy established • The Jagiellon dynasti  period brought close ties with the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, cultural development and territorial expansion, culminating in the establishment of the Polish-Lithuanian Commenwealth in 1569

  23. Slovakia • Slovakia is an independent state. It is in the middle of Europe. It is bordered by the Czech Republic, Poland, Ukraine, Hungary and Austria. The weather is changeable. People use euro in Slovakia. The population is about of 5 million people. The capital is Bratislava. It is an important, political and industrial centre. The capital city is the largest city in Slovakia. It is the seat of the Slovak president, the parlament, and the executive branch of the government. It is home to several universities, museums, theatres, galleries and other important cultural and educational institutions.
