Outcomes and Objectives • NLC adopted the six THECB Core Objectives as General Education Competencies for the Core Curriculum. • Every course in the Core Curriculum has course-level SLOs that are linked to one or more Core Objectives. • NLC faculty developed Program Outcomes for each of the academic programs. As a community college, NLC’s programs are broad: Associate of Arts, Associate of Arts in Teaching and Associate of Science. • Every course that can be taken to satisfy concentration requirements has course-level SLOs that are linked to Program Outcomes. • The Program Outcomes are natural extensions of the concepts introduced in the Core Objectives.
Assessment of Course-Level SLOs: Every Student, Every Course • NLC faculty track each individual student’s achievement of SLOs in each course. • The instructor denotes the standard for mastery on course assignments, activities or experiences and indicates which students mastered the SLO based on performance during the semester. • The instructor submits an Excel sheet for each course.
Department Level use of data: • SLO data is submitted every semester to Department Chairs who assess the trends in each course. • Chairs address issues with individual faculty members and with the entire department. • Departmental discussion engages the faculty in an open dialogue about how to better address learning objectives for student success. • Department level data analysis can also lead to revision of faulty SLOs.
Institutional use of data: • Graduates’ and Core Completers’ records are assessed annually by the Assistant to the President. • Curriculum maps and assessment reports of each student’s accomplishment of Program Outcomes and Core Objectives are compiled. • These reports are submitted to the Dean of Arts and Sciences. The Dean facilitates meetings with Department Chairs to influence decisions regarding staffing, syllabi requirements and SLO assessment.
