  2. TEXT: Col 3:12-15 • As those who are “chosen of God,” there are several things which help us to maintain a healthy, loving family relationship, in our own homes and in the house of God. The first of these is:

  3. I. We accept one another • A. As we are (Rom 15:7)—we grant access to our heart and take into our friendship and our lives • B. We also accept one another’s opinions (Rom 14:1-3)—but there is a further provision for this

  4. II. We admonish one another • A. To admonish is to give instruction that is primarily a warning against things that are wrong (Rom 15:14) • B. There are two things that are needed to be effective in admonishing • 1. Full of goodness (proper inner attitude evidenced in kindness in speech) • 2. Filled with all knowledge—because of the Word of God and right interpretation (2 Tim 3:16) • C. So, “opinion” must be based upon the truth of God and His Word

  5. III. We bear the burdens of one another • A. To “bear the weight pressing down” (Gal 6:2) • B. Christ demonstrated how to do this (John 14:27) • C. It also involves “bearing with one another” (Eph 4:1-2; Col 3:12-13) • 1. This means to be patient and endure one another • D. Thus we are to stand firm when others fail, and forgive them as we are forgiven (Col 3:13)

  6. IV. We forgive one another • A. To forgive means that we choose to give a favor unconditionally and let go of things from the past so that they are not held against the other person any longer • 1. Note that it does not include “forgetting” but not “carrying a grudge” or “holding it against them” (cf. Heb 8:12; Rom 3:24; Psalm 103:12)

  7. B. Forgiving makes it possible for: • 1. God’s love to flow into our lives • 2. God’s love to flow throughout our lives (to permeate us) • 3. God’s love to flow from our lives
