  1. Welcome to 5th Grade’s Open House The goal for your child is to be ready for 6th grade. How will we do this? Teach the 5th grade curriculum, help your student become organized, and help your child develop responsible work and study habits.

  2. Attendance and Tardy PolicyWe teach from bell to bell.  • Our day begins at 8:00. Your child is tardy at 8:01. • Attendance Rules • All time out of school is recorded and summed for total days out per quarter. 5 or more total days per quarter or 30 days per year will require a visit by a school board employee. • Notes or call-ins to report absences are imperative . • Excused absences will result in no academic penalty as long as missed work is made-up within 2 days. Unexcused absences will result in a zero for the work missed. • If your child likes to socialize, please have him/her here at 7:30 so that he/she can chat while in the cafeteria. • Science - If your child misses a hands-on activity or video clip due to absence, there will be no make-up.Paper pencil activities, classwork, note taking, etc. will need to be made up.

  3. Uniform Dress Code • Fifth graders are the role models. • Be sure bottoms are navy or khaki. • Tops need to be red, blue, or white. • Sweaters or jackets need to be white, blue, or red. • Girls bottoms need to be finger tip length. • Shirts should be tucked and pants belted.

  4. 5th Grade Jobs & Clubs • Computer Aides, Media Helpers, Safety Patrols, TOTs, and WGES, are jobs. • Eco-patrol, math club, and student council are clubs. • Jobs are a privilege. • Keeping a job requires responsible behavior inside and outside of the classroom at all times. • Keeping a job requires academic effort at all times. • Students are expected to make-up any work missed while performing a job. • A job does not excuse a student from schoolwork.

  5. Curriculum • Integration of Common Core State Standards and Next Generation Sunshine State Standards (NGSSS). • Testing will be the FCAT. • Students will be responsible for mastering the NGSSS. • The Fifth Grade Curriculum is more challenging. • The FCAT bar has been raised. • A student who earned a scaled score of 243 in 4th grade earned a level 5. • A student who earns a scaled score of 243 in 5th grade will earn a level 4

  10. Grading • Expectations are high for our 5th Graders. • When a due date is given, work is expected. • If work is late, the student will lose one letter grade for each day late. • This policy is meant to promote fairness among the students in a class and among the classes within the grade.

  11. Homework • Homework will be given nightly Monday - Friday. • Long-term projects will overlap weekends. • Check planner nightly and sign (mandatory). • Check that your child has done the work assigned. • Missed homework = an X. An accumulation of 3 X’s in a quarter will result in a 3 on the report card for Homework and Follows Directions. This will keep your child off the Honor Roll.

  12. Griffin Discipline Plan

  13. Field Trips & Activities • In 5th grade there are many reward based trips and activities. • These are privileges that are earned. • Any student who has 2 referrals will not participate. • Students with behavior and/or academic difficulties may not be allowed to participate. • Consistent 3’s on report cards in homework, behavior, etc.

  14. Organizational Skills • These are skills necessary for life, for college, for high school, for middle school, and for 5th grade. • To help develop these skills: • Students cannot put items in their desks. • Students must keep their backpacks neat and purged. • Students must write in their planners daily. Preparation for College and Career!

  15. Thank you for your time! Please go to your child’s classroom.
