  4. Welcome People need a place to live and the perfect place to call home is….well a house. Lets discover the many house styles to choose from and find one that will be your home sweet home. Put the information to come in memory as there will be a Quizat the end.

  6. Why Different House Designs? • Personal Preference • Climate • Family Needs • Luxurious Living

  7. Cape Cod • Developed over 200 years ago • Originated as a fairly small house • Steep Roof • Little Overhang • Central Chimney/Room Fireplaces • 1 or 1 ½ story • Eave lines near top of windows • Siding narrow lines • Usually have shutters • One of the oldest of Colonial

  8. Cape Ann • Developed over 200 yrs ago. • Chimney Centrally located and larger than ½ . • Tapering Gambrel roof-extra room. • Gambrel Advantages • Extra head room and usable space. • Shorter rafter length/economic.

  9. Garrison • Overhanging Second floor. • Separate Corner posts on each floor. • Short straight lines/economic framing. • Extra Space 2nd level with overhang (cheap) • Steep Pitch(adds attic space)

  10. Salt Box • Looks like a Salt Box • Long Roof lines sloping from ridge to Eaves. • Long slanting roof(Aids against bitter winds)

Southern Colonial • Most gracious of all colonials. • Style reflects warmth, quaintness, and hospitality of old south. • Architectural Features • Front Colonnade. • Giant Portico • Massive with upper and lower balconies. • 3 Story Chimney for Bedroom fireplaces. • Ornate woodwork and Iron Trim.

  12. Contemporary Structures • Contemporary/Modern. • Not a particular Style. • Architects Job to please client. • Individual Taste. • Anything imagined.

  13. Ranch Design • Low, long, one story house; Southwest. • Low pitched roof. • Gables and overhanging eaves. • Normally built on slab. • Changes Over the Years • 1 or 2 car garage. • Basement • Skylights • L-shaped • Cathedral Ceilings.

  14. Traditional and ContemporaryTrends • Freedom of Design. • Individual Preference. • Material-energy efficient and weather resistant. • Structural Techniques. • Dramatic Effects. • Setting-Hillside-Seashore-Cliffs. • Openness.
