  2. Case History • NAME: Sheldon Lee Cooper • AGE: ~32 years old • FAMILY INFORMATION: • Mother-Mary-devout Christian from East Texas • Father-George-died • Twin sister-Missy-direct opposite of her brother in many ways • Older brother-George Jr.

  3. Case history • PROFESSION: Theoretical physicist at CalTech • MAJOR LIFE EVENTS: • Bullied as a child • Mishaps in childhood experiments (i.e. radiation damage) • Childhood genius (graduated college at 14, youngest person to receive a Stevenson Award, received his first doctorate at 16)

  4. Diagnosis After extended research, our team has come to the conclusion that Sheldon Cooper is suffering from: • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder • Narcissistic Personality Disorder • Mysophobia

  5. Causes of Behavior • Childlike qualities (which he is unaware of) • Lack of empathy • Extreme Stubbornness • Extensive knowledge(Which he is aware of) • These disorders most likely developed due to both nature and nurture • Doesn’t agree with his mother’s beliefs

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder An anxiety disorder in which people have unwanted thoughts, feelings and/or sensations (obsessions), or behaviors that make him/her feel like they have to do something (compulsions). Compulsive Symptoms • Washing and cleaning • Counting • Checking • Demanding reassurances • Performing the same action repeatedly • Orderliness • Sheldon's Spot • Sheldon knocking on door Obsessive Symptoms Fear of being contaminated by shaking hands or by touching objects others have touched Excessive need to have things in order Rituals of cleanliness Having everything organized

Narcissistic personality disorder • Condition in which a person has an extreme sense of self-importance, preoccupation with themselves, lacks empathy toward other people’s feelings • SYMPTOMS: • Excessive arrogance/haughtiness • Has sense of entitlement/ importance • Envious of others • Place own views over others • Lack of empathy toward others • Fantasizes of extreme success and power • Sheldon's Narcissism

Mysophobia • An anxiety disorder that causes a pathological fear of germs- “Germaphobia” • Signs/Symptoms: • If fear takes over and one finds themselves suffering from physical symptoms • One recognizes that avoiding germs is taking over daily routines • Avoiding people, places or things in order to prevent germ contamination • Excessive use of antibacterial soap and disinfectant products • Extreme fear of getting sick • Sheldon Mysophobia- 30 sec.
