Madagascar • Population: 18,040,341 • Land Area: 581,540 sq km • The country has very high level of species endemism
Threats facing Paratilapia polleni • Over-exploitation • Lack of knowledge by the locals about the conservation status of the species • Adverse climatic conditions- Dry-season affects the breeding activity • Predator- Channa maculata (Blotched snakehead)

Map of Project Area Project Area: Andrahanjo village in the 1st region of Antsiranana, northern part of Madagascar. Paratilapia polleni, a Madagascar cichlid
Actions to conserve P.polleni in Madagascar • Contacted the Ministry of the Aquacultures about this threatened fish species • Request accepted & technical assistance from Aquaculture Department was provided. • Meeting with the local communities to address the conservation issue. • As a result: • 9 families volunteered to do fish breeding
Solutions • Tree planting to reduce soil erosion and siltation and increase water flow • Increase the number of the fish ponds for conservation • Introduction of modern breeding techniques • Increase conservation awareness amongst villages of Andrahanjo especially conservation of Paratilapia polleni
Way forward • Use GIS in planning and awareness raisingwithin the Andrahanjo areas • Extend our conservation work into other villages and towns • Increase awareness programs within the village • Conserve and increase the population of this fish species to other areas of Madagascar
