Activity • All data and answers are to be recorded on the left page of your interactive notebook. • Do Not touch the brown paper bag at your station until directed to. • Do not open any of the brown paper bags.
Mystery box activity • Purpose: To learn to make accurate, unbiased observations and inferences. Intro: • One of the most powerful skills of a scientist is their ability to make accurate , concise observations. To do this well, they must use all of their senses. This activity is to help you practice using you observation and inference skills.
Observation • Observation: information through the senses. • I saw.. • I heard… • It tasted…. • Example: Zarya is wearing a red shirt.
Inference • Inference: an interpretations derived from an observation, fact, prior knowledge, and/or other premises. • I think… • I believe… • Nikki sneezed. She might have a cold.
????Brown paper bags????? • You and your shoulderpartner will try and answer the following questions without opening the brown paper bag. • You may lift the brown paper bag. • You make shake the brown paper bag. • JUST DO NOT OPEN THE BAG.
For each of the bagsyour team is able to investigate answer the following • How many objects are in the bag? • What size is the object or objects? • What are they made of? • What does it look like? • Record 3 observations about the contents of the bag. • What do you believe is in the bag? This is an inference!
