5. Strand A: Scientific Investigation Skills • 1. Initiating and planning experiments to answer questions of cause and effect. • 2. Developing lab skills by performing simple experiments and recording skills of creating tables and drawing graphs. • 3. Furthering analysing and interpreting abilities through GUSS problem solving and mathematical literacy. • 4. Expanding communication skills through laboratory report writing and oral communication.

6. Strand B: Biology - Sustainable Ecosystems • 1. Ecosystems are dynamic and have the ability to respond to change, within limits, while maintaining their ecological balance. • 2. Space exploration has generated valuable knowledge but at enormous cost.

The production and consumption of electrical energy has social, economic, and environmental implications. • 3. Static and current electricity have distinct properties that determine how they are used.

SAFETY PRACTICES FOR SCIENCE CLASSES 1) Food and drinks may not be brought into the lab. 2) Coats & bags may not be brought into the lab. 3) Safety glasses must be worn when using Bunsen burners or hazardous chemicals. 4) Students must stand up during lab work. 5) Accidents must be reported to the teacher. 6) Long hair must be tied back. 7) Wash hands after contact with chemicals. 8) Keep lab bench clutter to a minimum to prevent accidents. 9) Students may not enter the science office. 10) Never leave a lit Bunsen burner unattended.

Departmental Policies: Absences: Tests -An absence on the day of a test must be fully accountable (through a dated, written note from a parent or guardian). -An unexplained absence (skipping) during a test will result in a mark of zero. -Adult students need to get prior approval before signing out before a test. -The legitimacy of their explanations will be evaluated by the subject teacher at the time.-

Departmental Policies: Absences: Culminating Tasks -In this course, the culminating tasks are treated in the same manner as a final examination. -Missing a deadline or presentation day must be for a significant reason such as a serious illness, or bereavement. -Evidence, such as a letter from a medical professional, must be provided to support the reason. -A student who misses a culminating task deadline without a legitimate reason will receive a mark of zero for that assignment.

Departmental Policies: Absences: Laboratory Activities -The expectations in science courses call for an active, experimental approach to learning, with all students participating regularly in laboratory activities. -Laboratory activities can reinforce the learning of scientific concepts and promote the development of the skills of scientific investigations and communication. -At the discretion of the teacher, students may be required to make up any missed lab work.

14. Departmental Policies: Safety Sheets -Students will not be allowed to participate in laboratory activities until they have returned a safety sheet signed by a parent or guardian to indicate that the student understands and agrees to abide by the departmental safety rules. -Lab activities that a student misses due to delay in returning the sheet are expected to be made up independently by the student.

15. Departmental Policies: Cheating & Plagiarism -Cheating and plagiarism (copying someone else’s work and submitting it as your own) are serious offences. -The departmental consequence shall be in accordance with the school policy.

16. Departmental Policies: Work Completion -All assignments & labs are to be handed in by the date assigned. -No assignments will be accepted after the marked assignments have been handed back to the rest of the class. -Major assignments will require completion of a “Missed Assignment Form”.
