  3. Purpose of the mission • The principal scientific purpose for this flight was to study the density of the upper atmosphere

  4. Fact about sputnik Sputnik 1 was launched into earths orbit on October 4th 1957. It was the first man made satellite and was made by the Soviet Union. To put sputnik into space the soviets used a powerful rocket to launch it high above Earth and shoot it  to the ground at a very high speed. It's primary purpose was to send back temperatures of space. It did so in the form of beeps. Sputnik weighed 405 lbs, and It's diameter  is 23 inches across. Sputnik was in orbit around the earth for 3 months after it's launch in 1957. Then after it's 3 month journey in space it burned up in the atmosphere. It was a very big step that launched the space race.

  5. Out coming There was another lucky outcome of Sputnik. Two years earlier, President Dwight D. Eisenhower had proposed "Open Skies," under which the United States and Russia would permit spy-plane over flights so each would know the other's military capabilities. The idea was to reduce mutual uncertainty and strengthen deterrence. Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev rejected the idea out of hand.
