  1. How the reformation spreads

  2. Branches of Christianity

  3. Martin Luther

  4. The essential differences • Protestant: Lutheran (Germany) – interprets the bible differently than Catholic church. The degree of authority of the Pope is the essential difference. • Protestant: Zwingli, Calvin (Switzerland) • Also interpret the bible differently from the Catholic church and Luther.

  5. Zwingli (Switzerland) • The doctrinal matter that set me apart from Luther and Roman Catholicism was the Eucharist. I denied the real presence of Christ in the Host but instead it is a respectful remembrance. • The last supper..

  6. The last supper

  7. John Calvin • found truth in Luther’s teachings, and so taught the ideas of the Reformation in France. • had to flee from France, and I found protection in Geneva, Switzerland and my followers there are called “Calvinists”. • My Church and teachings had one little twist; that God had already chosen who would be given entry into heaven – those people who could maintain proper conduct were probably part of the chosen group. • Predisposition

  8. John Calvin • Because I was so appalled by the Catholic church and its luxuries, my religious houses were very plain: no pictures, no organ, no laughing or making noise in the church. • Outside of church, my followers were not allowed to participate in fortunetelling, gambling, or dancing. • Despite all these harsh rules (which councils were elected to enforce) by the time I died in 1564, there were members following the faith across Europe.

  9. Essential question • In which ways did the reformation spread across Europe. • Answer in essay form using google docs.

  10. Non-Fiction Writing • One of the main focuses this year will be to work on your non-fiction writing (Academic essay) • What does non-fiction writing look like? • Proposes a claim. • Clear thesis • Evidence supporting your claim • A conclusion

  11. Examples • The Claim: The students could not learn because it was too hot. • English Class: Unimpeded by clouds, the sun glared upon the school. The students stuck to their chairs like glue while their shirts were soaked in perspiration. The line-up for the water-fountain stretched from hallway to hallway. It was dreadfully clear, it was too hot for the students to learn.

  12. Non-Fiction Writing • Socials Studies: • On Tuesday, October 8th, 2014 the students at Collingwood were in school on a day which saw a high of 40 degrees Celsius. Research indicates that the optimal temperature for learning is 18 degrees Celsius. Therefore, it was too hot for the students to learn.
