Job Description • Bricklayers build houses, chimneys, patios and anything that requires stacking concrete blocks and bricks. • Stonemasons jobs are similar, but it includes cutting stones to size for building.
Working conditions • Bricklayers mostly work outdoors. • It is a dirty job: mortar, dust and mud are all tools of the trade. • Most bricklayers work in non-winter months do to weather conditions.
Earnings • Bricklayers are usually paid by the hour. • Rates vary depending on where you live. • Pay range is from $12 to $30 per hour. • More experienced bricklayers could make up to $35 per hour.
Education/Training • Most bricklayers learn on-the-job in an apprenticeship program. • Apprenticeship programs could take up to 3 years to complete. • A high-school diploma may be required. • You may take a 2-year program at a vocational school for training.
