GOVERNMENT’S PRIORITIES • Around 60% of the continent’s unemployed are aged 15-24 • South Africa: ~ 37% youth population, 4-5 million unemployed youth (age 15-34) • Government’s initiatives aimed at the youth: NYSP & YiSS
NATIONAL YOUTH SERVICE PROGRAMME • Address unemployment among the youth • Equip the youth with skills: employment or start small businesses • FabLabs Programme able to contribute to objectives
YOUTH INTO SCIENCE STRATEGY • Launched in September 2007 • Promote science awareness and understanding among the youth • Encourage more young people to study in the sciences and engineering and to pursue careers in those directions • Network of Science Centres • Synergies between FabLabs & Science Centres
