Texas By 1834 Americans outnumbered Mexicans in Texas 4-1. over 20,000 Americans had moved there.
Texas General Antonio López de Santa Anna, who had been elected Mexico’s president in 1833, was increasingly disturbed by the large numbers of white settlers. Under a new constitution, he took away any special privileges in Texas and forbade additional settlers from coming into the area.
Texas The “Texians” made the decision to declare Mexico Santa Anna led about 2,000 troops against the rebellious Texians. He quickly took control of San Antonio but was not able to capture the Alamo, an old Spanish Mission that had been converted to a fort.
Texas After a siege of twelve days, Santa Anna’s troops stormed the fort. All of the Texas settlers were killed. A few weeks later, Santa Anna ordered the execution of 350 Texiansthat were being held at Goliad These were soldiers that had surrendered.
Texas The massacres at the Alamo and Goliad became a rallying point for the Texians. This motivation gave them what they needed to defeat the Mexican army 2 months later at the Battle of San Jacinto. The Texians formed a new country called the Republic of Texas. It became part of the United States in 1845.
