  2. About Manoa Public Library • Part of the Hawaii State Public Library System • Walking distance from UH-Manoa • 2716 Woodlawn Drive • Honolulu, HI 96822

  3. Early History • Opened on August 23, 1966 • 1 story building, covering 6,500-square-foot building

  4. Demands for Expansion • In 1980, state Senator Neil Abercrombie lobbied for the library’s expansion • It wasn’t until 2005 when the state legislature provided funding to totally renovate the library

  5. Ready for renovation • The old Manoa Public Library closed July 2, 2009 • Temporary library at nearby Noelani Elementary School

  6. Renovation • Groundbreaking on October 17, 2009

  7. New life • Reopened June 9, 2012 • 1st floor – parking lot, entrance • 2nd floor –main library space • Now covers 29,425-square-foot

  8. Going Green • Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design ( LEED) certified • Solar panels • High-efficiency air conditioning • High performance window glass • Catchment tank (to irrigate outside plants) • Sensor-operated faucets, waterless urinals

  9. Computer technology • Free Wi-Fi • 18 public-use laptops • 10 desk spaces for those who bring their own laptops
