The metric system (p.12) • We will use the MKS (meters, kilograms, and seconds) unit system in this class. • The early part of the course will include some simple conversions and you will develop some awareness of “how large or small” a quantity is compared to known values in the English system (mi/hr, miles, etc.)
A first question: • How long is a micro Century (1 X 10 -6 Century) in minutes?
Significant figures… • Read pp. 18-19 for specifics... The racetrack lab and the following example are used as a tutorial. • I do not get overly technical about this, but DO NOT write down all the digits in your calculator. • All homework answers will try to utilize the correct significant figures. • In problem solving… • (a) Round at the end of the problem • (b) You only can be as precise as your least precise measurement. • (c) You are allowed to carry one digit beyond what you can safely measure.
Racetrack Lab Problem…. • A kangaroo hops a distance of 40.000 m in 3.6 seconds. One 5.000 m interval resulted in a change in time ( sec). • (a) What is the average speed of the kangaroo in m/s? (Show work and proper sig. figs) (b) What is the instantaneous speed (speedometer speed) of the kangaroo?
