What are Polymers? • Polymer: a long chain made up of repeating subunits called monomers, connected by covalent bonds • Natural vs. Synthetic Polymers • Proteins (Amino Acids) • DNA (Nucleic Acids) • Carbohydrates
Formation does not occur by itself, must be initiated by a series of chemical events/promotors • Two Types: • Condensation • Addition

2. Addition Polymerization • Uses a C=C addition reaction • all monomers require a double bond • Chains are formed by the rearrangement of bonds, without the loss of an atom • Reminder: polymerizing promotors are required for the reaction to proceed
