  3. Graduation Requirements • 2.0 un-weighted (State) G.P.A. • Minimum of 24 credits in specific areas.

Graduation Requirements • 4 English Credits • English I, II, III, IV • 4 Math Credits • Must include Algebra 1 (EOC 30% of final grade) or equivalent & Geometry • 3 Science Credits • Two credits must have a lab component • 3 Social Studies Credits • 1 World History, 1 American History (EOC 30% of final grade,½ Economics, ½ American Government

  5. Graduation Requirements • 1 Credit Fine Arts • Fine or performing arts, speech, debate, or an approved practical arts course. • 1 Credit in HOPE • 2 credits in ROTC can substitute for the HOPE and Fine Arts requirements. • ½ Credit in Reading • 7.5 Credits of Elective Coursework.

What about Foreign Language? • Foreign language is not required for high school graduation. • 2 credits of the same foreign language are required for admission into four-year colleges and universities. • Bright Futures Scholarships: Both Florida Medallion and Florida Academic Scholars programs require 2 credits of the same foreign language.

Making up Classes • Florida Virtual School • Offered through the internet for free. • 9-18 weeks per ½ credit. • Students sign up online at FLVS.net. • Credit Recovery • Offered after school in computer lab at AHS. • Completion time varies for each student. • Students sign up with guidance counselor.

  9. Making up Classes • Night School • Offered at various schools throughout the county from approximately 6-9 pm two days per week. • Three closest: Brandon, TBT, Plant City • Minimum 9 weeks per ½ credit. • Students sign up with guidance counselor.

  11. What Do Colleges Look For? • Rigor of courses taken • Extracurricular activities • Class rank • Application essays • Recommendations • Beware Senioritis!!!!! • Current tuition and fees for Florida residents averaged $205 a credit hour or $6,155 for 30 hours (2 semesters).

  12. Applying to College • Apply EARLY! (Meaning Now) • Easiest way to apply is online through each school’s website. • Proofread your information for typos and errors. • Send your application even without test scores.

Applying to College • Sign up to retake or take SAT/ACT. • Students on free/reduced lunch qualify for 2 fee waivers for SAT and 2 for ACT. • Also qualify for up to 8 college application fee waiver requests if given SAT & ACT waivers. • Prepare a resume of activities and awards from grades 9-12.

Applying to College • Sending Transcripts • Request forms are available in the Guidance Office and on Edsby. • Transcripts sent electronically or for scholarships are free. • Paper copies of transcripts are $2 each. • Transcripts for students on free/reduced lunch are free. • It can take several days for colleges to receive transcripts (even electronically), so send them early.

  25. FAFSAFREE Application for Federal Student Aid • FAFSA.ed.gov • Determines if students qualify for federal grants, loans, and work study programs. • Some colleges require the FAFSA to be considered for scholarships. • Can be filled out starting January 1st.

Bright Futures Scholarships • Application opens December 1st. • Students will need to know their SS #. • Twenty-two state programs on BF application! • ALL students should apply even if they plan to go out of state, join the military or haven’t met the requirements yet. • Cannot be completed after graduation.

  35. Florida Medallion Scholar • 16 core classes • 3.0 recalculated GPA • 75 hours community service • 1170 SAT (Between Reading and Math sections only) or 26 ACT composite. • Currently pays $77 per credit hour at a 4-year university.

Florida Gold Seal • 3.0 recalculated GPA • 3 credits in a vocational area • 3.5 GPA in vocational area • 16 core Classes • 30 hours community service • SAT (440 Reading, 440 Math) or ACT (17 English, 18 Reading, 19 Math) or PERT (104 Reading, 99 Writing, 113 Math) • Pays between $39-48 per credit hour • Only covers A.S, A.A.S, Applied Technology Diplomas, and Career Certificate Programs.
