  1. Arguments Consider Multiple Viewpoints

  2. Have you ever had an argument with someone who disagreed with every single one of your points? Frustrating, right? Argument is a collaborative activity with two or more people, so to make an argument fair and productive one must openly acknowledge the audience’s good points and even some of your own weak points. So too is anticipating and answering possible objections to demonstrate you have thought out various perspectives on the issue.

  3. Anticipating Objections & Making Concessions • When you anticipate objections to your argument or proposal, you are making an effort to see the others' viewpoints. • When you make a concession, you give in to part of the other person's objections or views. You admit that they are half right, or that they have a valid concern. Then you overcome that concern by logic and/or a solution.

  4. “But won’t that Weaken My Argument?” • You demonstrate your fair and open minded (strengthening your credibility) • You recognize that there are other opinions that are valid (other than your own) • You learn to strengthen your own argument by disarming the opponent (now they can’t say anything about your argument).

  5. Obama’s Debate Tactics Reveal He Tries to Grapple with An Issueby: David Doody

  6. Class activity • Sell the Product to your Peers (audience) • In order to sell the product you must anticipate objections for buying it in the first place: price, effectiveness, unhealthy, lack of credibility (brand name), it’s not the right time, etc.
