  1. False Cause Definition: You presumed that a real or perceived relationship between things means that one is the cause of the other. Many people confuse correlation (things happening together or in sequence) for causation (that one thing actually causes the other to happen). Sometimes correlation is coincidental, or it may be attributable to a common cause.

Who Would You Interview? • If you’re like most employers, you would select Candidate #2’s resume because it is clearly formatted, tailored to the position, and includes high-impact accomplishment statements. Candidate #1’s resume is more difficult to follow, looks general, doesn’t effectively utilize the space on the page, and has a few minor errors. This less effective resume might cause an employer to believe that the candidate is lazy, has poor attention to detail, or has not achieved as much as he actually has. Your resume is the employer’s view into your work performance; your resume represents you in one (or two) pages. • You may have already noticed that the same person is presented in both resumes, one of which was an actual resume submitted by a Teach For America alumnus and the other is the same resume edited using tips in this toolkit. See the next page to view key changes made to this resume.

Recent Accomplishments The Inverted Pyramid Framework An excellent resume organizes information in an inverted pyramid to help the employer easily locate information about the applicant’s most relevant accomplishments. To apply this framework to your resume, devote the vast majority of space on your resume to your most recent and relevant accomplishments and put this information near the top. As a rule of thumb, the further you go into the past, the less detail should be included about your achievements. Past Accomplishments

Five Key Components of an Excellent Resume • An excellent resume is easily readable. • An excellent resume is tailored to the opportunity and designed to catch the employer’s attention. • An excellent resume is concise. • An excellent resume is consistently formatted. • An excellent resume is flawless.

Write Strong Accomplishment Statements for Your EXPERIENCE Section Excellent accomplishment statements will meet the following requirements: • written in a clear and concise manner that will be understandable to the employer • begin with a strong action verb – avoid vague verbs such as “worked”, “took part in”, or “handled” or weak lead-ins, such as “responsible for”, “gained experience in” and “assisted with” (see Appendix 2 for action verb ideas) • highlight your specific role in the accomplishment

QUICK TIP: ASK THREE QUESTIONS TO STRENGTHEN YOUR ACCOMPLISHMENT STATEMENTS • If you are not sure whether your accomplishment statements are powerful, ask yourself the following questions after you read each statement: • “What did you do?” (be specific about actions you took) • “What impact did you have?” • “How did you know?” (quantify if possible using numbers and percentages)

Online Applications If you are submitting your resume online or to a large employer, the employer may be using a computer program to initially screen each resume for keywords that may indicate a potential “fit”. In these instances, incorporating related action verbs and desired skills and qualifications from the job description is essential to getting employers to notice your resume.
