GNOME PROJECT TONY MCCOY EDL 539 SPRING 2010
GOAL: school and community put on outdoor show Uncertainty in education funding and cuts to school budgets and programs: • Put on a quality outdoor show • Raise money for athletic programs in Elmwood by getting cash out of new sources (instead of selling raffle tickets and stuff to the same people who always pay for these types of things) • Make the students work for the money • so the adults didn't have to carry all the load • student volunteers to help vendors and outdoor show committee • Show off the community to people who were not regular visitors or who had not been here before • Work with community partners to put on successful outdoor show • Local Fire/Police Departments • Local Churches • Education Foundation • Business Leaders • School Administration and Staff • Coaches and Students • Booster Club

Those effects can be particularly important for students who belong to ethnic minorities, students with disabilities, and students at risk of dropping out of school. Holloway told Education World that research indicates "participation in school activities, especially athletics, leads to higher self-esteem and an enhanced status among peers. Some have argued that a positive self-esteem is a deterrent to antisocial behavior." • Research say about volunteering in community: According to principals, the primary reasons that schools engage in service-learning is because it helps to augment students’ civic behaviors. For example, 53 percent of principals reported in 1999 that they value service-learning as a way to help students become more active members of the community. A large body of research shows that service-learning has many positive effects on students’ academic achievement and engagement in school. • Positive Community Event
