  3. What you need to know: The Facts • Exams are getting harder each year. • Knowledge and the retention of knowledge is key! • Most GCSEs are now assessed only by end of course exams. • Each year students miss their target grades by 1 or 2 marks.

  4. What you need to know: The Facts • A grade 4 is a standard pass and a grade 5 is a strong pass. • Students should achieve at least a grade 4 (standard) pass in English and maths otherwise they will have to re-sit these GCSEs. • Competition for FE and HE places means that students should aim to at least achieve at least a grade 5 in all subjects if they are to secure places on their chosen courses.

  5. What you need to know: The Facts • The ‘gold standard’ remains to be that students achieve in a range of subjects and make at least expected progress across ALL subjects, achieving their target grades.

Q4: Evaluate how the writer… Writing: Q5: You are going to enter a creative writing competition. Your entry will be judged by a panel of people of your own age. Write a description suggested by this picture: OR: Write the opening part of a story about a place that is severely affected by the weather.

Watch favourite television programme and discuss what you learn about the characters. • Q2 • Look at openings to novels or even films and discuss how they are effective and what parts you find interesting. • Q3 • Watch a film and consider how it begins, develops and ends. • Q4 • Watch/ listen to the news and form opinions on key issues. Agree or disagree – what’s your thoughts? • Q5 • Look at old photos/ pause the TV and talk about the story behind the image. • Use family members as inspiration for characters. • When travelling take in the setting and describe it in a few words.

Mathematics Department • How do we help support your child in preparation for their GCSE maths exam? • We track the progress of all students to highlight areas for development and support students who are not on track to reach their goal in maths. • Half termly and termly intervention groups run to support small groups of students to “fill in the gaps” in their understanding. • End of year examinations and mock exams are analysed and a PLC is produced for each student to help with revision. • Our door is always open for some individual support!

  29. Mathematics Department • What is a PLC? • A Personalised Learning Checklist is an individualised revision plan provided following each mock exam to highlight strengths and areas for development

  30. Mathematics Department • When does intervention take place? • The majority of intervention takes place in the classroom. However, between 2.45 and 3.45 on a Tuesday evening there is a rolling support programme. All students will be informed when a group suitable for them is running. • A rolling programme of intervention also takes place for Year 11 students during registration on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings. Again students will be informed when an appropriate group is on.

Mathematics Department • How can your child make the most of their revision time? • Little and often – 40 minutes revision at one time is plenty. • Keep them organised – Plan a revision programme with them to include specific topics and stick to it. • Structure revision – spend about 10 minutes recapping common topics and then focus on one particular area for development. • Don’t sweat the small stuff – if they don’t get it just move on to the next topic. Just make a note of it and ask for help. • Don’t let them multi-task – a little music is fine but no tv and no phones!! • Give them space to work – somewhere quiet and clear is best.
