  6. Activities • Continuation of cohort #1… deepen change • Creation of cohort #2… dedicated to change • PD for cohort teachers and administrators • Blogging… sharing thoughts, questions, concerns • Wiki… posting lessons, resources, tools • Classroom observations (videotaped) • Coaching sessions • Instruction of SDSU students in teacher-preparation program… sharing videos of 21st Century skills in action in K-12 classrooms.

  7. Data CollectionTools and Processes • DSTEP (eMetric) • Lesson Plans and Rubrics • Observation Rubrics • Blog Archive • Perception / Attitude and Belief Surveys • State Technology Survey

  8. Successes • Twenty two teachers implemented strategies to increase critical thinking and problem solving in their classrooms. • Nineteen teachers implemented strategies to increase communication, collaboration, and creativity / innovation in their classrooms. • Forty one teachers complete four observations and coaching sessions. • Teachers overwhelmingly report positive results in student achievement.

  9. Challenges • Students often resist changes made in the classroom. • Teachers report it is a challenge to allow for the time students need to properly practice and master 21st Century skills (critical thinking / problem solving / creativity-innovation / communication / collaboration). • Teachers report a struggle to teach 21st Century skills when there is such a strong focus on preparing students for the Dakota Step test.

  10. Learnings • We must allow the time for students to master the 21st Century skills… the time it takes is worth it! Students will learn more in the long run. • Teachers must also have time to learn how to teach these skills. Professional development must last longer than one year on one topic. Teachers will need three to five years to really feel as though they are implementing this change as completely as it should be. • Classrooms must be about learning… not teaching

  12. Advice • Make it clear what the skills look like / sound like in the classroom. I saw a huge difference in effectiveness once I started using the rubric with teachers. • Keep encouraging teachers to do what they know is right even when the pressure is strong to simply prepare students for the Dakota Step test. They can accomplish both. • Remind teachers that 21st Century skills is about using a brain before using a computer.
