Structure of the my part of this session: • A little about me. • BTW: What would you be interested in knowing about professor’s lives? • What I’m supposed to say. • You go first. • What is as, if not more, important. • Some other stuff • If there’s time, a little on my research. • This is social science(?)

From 0 to 26 in little or no time: • Born in OR, Toddler in MA, Cardinals fan in MO, Grade, Middle and High School in NJ • Swarthmore College in PA: BA Biology • Soccer, Wrestling, Ultimate Frisbee • Radio – obscure 60s  garage/punk • Phi Psi • ‘84-’87 MSKCC bone marrow transplant lab tech • Ultimate Nationals • Car, Rent, Vegetarian, Beer, LPs

The last 15 years: • UC Santa Cruz, PhD in Sociology • More Ultimate • More Radio – Underground Americana • Met Diane (Emmett – our dog) • Various short-term jobs • MA: while writing dissertation • NH: Keene State • NC: Guilford College • Present job at MSU since Fall 1988 • Married Diane • Kid due 6/29/02

What Do You Think I’m Supposed to Say? • Read Syllabus • Regularly • Check on the web • Budget Time • Attend Class • Key points reviewed • Questions can be asked • Study hard • Take Notes – Outline/Write • Work Together • Ask Q’s of/Use: • Advisors • Faculty • TAs • Writing/Math Centers • Librarians • Come prepared!

  6. Learn how to learn #1 goal Do other stuff Go abroad Get outta town Join Clubs, Play IMs, Canoe the Red Cedar, Swim in the Outdoor Pool Be confused, don’t worry about it! Ask WHY? What? Eh. How? Sorta. Why? Useful! Change Your Major College is only going to be a fulfilling experience if it matters to you… What Matters More:

My research: • How society produces environmental problems and then blames or tries to control nature rather than alter society. • For example, ag pests and cockroaches. • Also, floods, fires, and earthquakes. • How poor people and people of color come to have more degraded environments than higher income folks and whites. • Chicken and egg/historical questions. • Spatial distribution questions. • Institutional (gov’t, economy, crime) questions\
