What do you think the water in the fountain may symbolize in the story? “The water of the fountain ran,…so much life in the city ran into death according to rule, time and tide waited for no man,…all things ran their course” (116). –last sentence of chap. 7 • Read the following passage. What is significant about it? “The sunset struck so brilliantly into the travelling carriage when it gained the hill-top, that its occupant was steeped in crimson. ‘It will die out,’ said Monsieur the Marquis, glancing at his hands, ‘directly’” (117). • Do you think Dickens is fair in his assessment of the two classes (2nd and 3rd Estates) or is he exaggerating? Why or Why not? • Who do you think is responsible for killing Monsieur the Marquis? What evidence can you provide to support your assessment? • What is the significance of the Gorgon’s head in chapter 9? • Summarize chapter 10.
