  1. Project Submission 101 Everything you need to know about submitting projects to the MRSF

  2. Due Dates • Junior Division: • January 29, 2014 • Senior Division: • February 4, 2014 All papers should be delivered to the MathScience Innovation Center no later than 5:00 p.m. on the due date.

  3. Putting the Paper Together • Projects include only 2 copies totalof the paper(one file copy & one screeners’ copy) • File copy includes ALL necessary forms and 1 copy of entire paper • Write the project number on the TOP LEFT of the 2nd copy (not on every page!!) Junior & Senior Divisions

  4. Putting the Paper Together • FIRST copy of the paper is the file copy • All necessary forms go on top of file copy ONLY • Student Information Form (generated from online registration) is stapled on top of file copy Junior & Senior Divisions

  5. Student Information Form Confirmation Page: To be printed out during Online Registration • Type title as a title, not as a • sentence • Capitalize as seen here • Do not use a period • Students print 2 copies: • one to keep • one to put on top of thefile copy for submission Note the Project Number in the upper right corner

  6. Student Information Form Note the signature line for students to indicate they plan to attend the Fair if accepted. Projects will not be screened without this signature!! Note the Signature Line

  7. Order of Forms • Student Information Form • Form 1 – Checklist for Adult Sponsor • Form 1A – Student Checklist • Written Research Plan (proposal) • Form 1B – Approval Form • Any other forms appropriate to that project (Forms 1C, 2, 3, 4, etc.)in numerical order

  8. Do Not Include This Page !!!! DO include the written information generated by these instructions

  9. Do Not Include The Abstract at this time !!!! Abstracts are submitted at Online Registration Abstracts MUST be displayed with the project at the fair in March

  10. DOInclude the Following Forms for ALL Projects :

  11. Student Information Form Signed by student

  12. Form 1 • Make sure all appropriate boxes are checked • Make sure it is signed and dated by the teacher

  13. Form 1A Don’t forget to have students fill in their Actual Start & End Dates

  14. Form 1B Student AND parent/guardian must have signed Signature dates MUST be BEFORE start of experiment For a TEAM project: each member of the team must have a separate Form 1B

Other Forms Possibly Included • Form 1C Institutional Research FormFor experiments conducted in a research facility (Dated AFTER completion of the experiment) • Form 2 Qualified Scientist Where specialized oversight of project is necessary • Form 3 Risk Assessment For experiments which could possibly harm the student researcher (acids, rockets, etc.) and where proof of direct supervision is required. This should not be used for bacteria projects. • Form 4 Human Subjects For any project involving human subjects; also need sample Informed Consent Form Continued ….

Other Forms Possibly Included • Form 5A Vertebrate Animal Form For non-invasive experiments conducted at home or at school • Form 5B Vertebrate Animal Form for research in an institutional lab only • Form 6A Potentially Hazardous BiologicalAgents For all projects using bacteria, fresh tissue, blood, etc. • Form 6B Human & Vertebrate TissueAlso must be included , in addition to 6A, for projects using fresh tissue • Form 7 Continuation ProjectsFor projects using research or knowledge gained in a previous year

  17. The Project Synopsis • The student’s whole paper (or a version that has been shortened to fit the MRSF page limits) • Page Limits (Includes paper from Introduction to Conclusion) • Junior Division: 6 pages • Senior Division: 8 pages Page Limit Does NOT include the Bibliography

The Project Synopsis • Includes: • Title • Introduction • Experimental Design (may stand alone or be included in Introduction or Procedure) • Procedure or Methods & Materials • Discussion: Includes Observations, Analysis of Data & Discussion of Results • Conclusion • Bibliography • Appendix • Graphs, data charts, pictures, etc.

  28. Pictures … Pictures are a great way to help screeners and judges visualize the experimental set-up or equipment. Pictures should NOT include any faces or information that would identify the student

  31. Now What ? • Choose a Category in Which to Compete • See “Handbook Overview” on the MRSF web site for information on available categories • Category selection can be critical to project acceptance • See “Deciding on a Project Category” for additional help

Online Registration • Students must save their synopsis as a single (.pdf) document • Students go to the website & click on “Online Registration” in the blue menu • Open the “Registration Instructions” and keep them open while registration is completed • Set up an MSiC profile • Register project • Select the correct category from the list • Type in or copy and paste the Abstractin the space provided Next …..

Online Registration • Click on “Upload Project” to browse for your PDF file • Select the file and either double click it or click “Open” • The file name should show up in the box to the left • Click on “Submit” (Click only once – it may take a minute) • The Student Portal will appear with welcome information • Click on your project number in the “My Projects” section and open your record. • Scroll down and locate your attachments section • View the Student Information Form & print TWO copies • Click on your user name in the upper right corner and select “LOGOUT” You are now finished with registration

  34. Now What ? • Projects will be read during the month of February • Acceptance lists will be posted on the MRSF web site on the afternoon/evening of 2/28/14 (delay due to snow) • Students have 2 weeks to prepare their display board and presentation
