  1. Freshman Physics • Jennifer Adams • (314) 854-6760

  2. Teacher Introduction Jennifer Adams St. Louis native BS Physics, MAE Ed Technology 9th Year at CHS Previously taught AP Physics in Rockwood School District Family

  3. Why Physics First? Concrete Experiences to Abstract Thought

  4. This Physics Class • Teaching Science Using Physics as a Context • Modeling Method • Presentation Skills • Students Direct the Learning

  5. Modeling Physics • Malcolm Wells and David Hestenes (1980’s) • US Department of Education: • One of the top 7 best K-12 educational technology programs • One of two Exemplary K-12 science programs

  6. First Unit • Uniform Motion • Box of Cars Activity • BB Lab • Blinky Car Lab

  7. Multiple Representations: Graphs

  8. Multiple Representations:Words (First) The high incline BB was faster than the low incline BB. The BB rolled at a constant speed.

  9. Multiple Representations:Words (refined) The BB on the high/low incline rolled down a tube starting at position 0. On the low incline, it moved in the positive direction with a constant velocity of 6.3 cm/beat for 18 beats. The BB on the high incline rolled in the positive direction with a constant velocity of 11.4 cm/beat for 10 beats.

  10. Multiple Representations:Diagrams + 0

  11. Multiple Representations:Mathematical Models

  12. Future Units • Uniform Acceleration • Forces • Electric Circuits • Electrostatics • Energy • Mechanical Waves

  13. To Ensure Success 1. Pay attention, stay positive, contribute. 2. Complete work on time. 3. Make corrections. 4. Get help immediately. Find common time with lab partners, peers, teachers. www.claytonphysics.net jenniferadams@claytonschools.net
