When adding and subtracting fractions, the first thing you do is look at the denominator. If the denominator is the same, you just add or subtract the numerator. If the denominators are different, you must get them alike before you can move on. How can you get them alike? Just find the LCM otherwise known as the LCD like we did Monday.
Let me walk you through one to refresh your memory. We need a common denominator to add these fractions. +
Find the LCD/LCM of the two denominators. 2 10 6 + 5 3 2 x 5 x 3 = 30 LCD/LCM = 30
Make equivalent fractions. Add the numerators 12 + 10 = 22 Do not add denominators + Simplify when possible 2 22 30 11 15
You Try ……. + Always convert improper fractions to mixed numbers for your final answer.
Watch your operation sign. Subtraction steps are the same as addition steps. Just subtract numerators instead of adding them. You Try ……. -
