Happy Wednesday Bio-Ninjas • Bellwork: Write down the five rules of Lab Safety (yesterday’s video notes)
Standard B2.B: know that hypotheses are tentative and testable statements that must capable of being supported or not supported by observational evidence. Hypotheses of durable explanatory power which have been tested over a wide variety of conditions are incorporated in theories • Essential Question: Why is the scientific method important and how is it used in this class?
Discussion Question: At your tables discuss the following question: In your opinion who are the best scientists in the world and why do think so?
Analysis Video http://marshmallowchallenge.com/Welcome.html
Discussion Question: • What are some things or events you have noticed in nature or in your life that make you question them? • Ex: How does ___________happen? • What causes__________to occur? • What are ________made of? • Why is_________the way it is? • How in the world did______get there? • * What have YOU always wondered?
Discussion Continued • What did you do to find the answer to that question? • How did you come up with an answer?
In finding your answer you actually conducted an experiment. Well….That’s Science!!!! That’s exactly what scientists do, and it’s something that most people do everyday. We look for answers to our biggest questions!
There is a formula that all scientists everywhere use to find the answers they are looking for. • It is called
TIME for NOTES • Set up Page 7 of your Journals for Cornell Notes • Essential Question: Why is the scientific method important and how is it used in this class?
The Scientific Method involves a series of steps that are used to investigate a natural occurrence.
Scientific Method Problem/Question Observation/Research Formulate a Hypothesis Experiment Collect and Analyze Results Conclusion
Steps of the Scientific Method 1. Problem/Question:Develop a question or problem that can be solved through experimentation.
Steps of the Scientific Method 2. Observation/Research: Make observations and research your topic.
Steps of the Scientific Method 3. Formulate a Hypothesis: Predict a possible answer to the problem or question. Example: If soil temperatures rise, then plant growth will increase.
Steps of the Scientific Method • Experiment:Develop and follow a procedure. *Be sure to test only one variable.
Steps of the Scientific Method 5. Collect and Analyze Results: Gather data and modify the procedure if needed.
Steps of the Scientific Method 6. Conclusion:Include a statement that accepts or rejects the hypothesis.
Foldable time! Page 2 • Hamburger and “shave the fold” • Fold a tab • Glue the back of the tab • Label the tab “Scientific Method” • Draw five lines to create six spaces Scientific Method
Foldable time! Page 6 Problem/Question • Label the spaces • Cut the lines • On the other side of the flap write the info from the notes • On the notebook paper under flap write an example. Observation/Research Scientific Method Formulate Hypothesis Experiment Collect/Analyze Data Conclusion
