Using Adaptive Learning Theory and a Schedule-based Flashcard to Enhance the Quality of Online Self Learning Hsing-Kuo (Tom)Lee, Chun-Hung Lu, Wen-Lian Hsu,Ching-Ching Lu, Wan-Chun Tang Institute of Information Science Acdemia Sinica, Taiwan
Outline • Introduction • Theoretical Foundation and Background • Adaptive Learning and the Schedule-based Flashcard Concept • Implemented Learning Tool • CWLS Demonstration • Conclusion and Future Work
Introduction • Adaptive Learning • an important component of e-learning because it offers flexible solutions to fit users’ real-time learning needs.
Introduction • A flashcard • usually has a question on one side and the answer on the other side, and is used to help the student memorize learning materials, such as vocabulary and formulae.
Theoretical Foundation and Background • Adaptive Learning • Related Works • De Bra – Adaptive Hypermedia System (AHS) • Specht - Web-based Intelligent Design and Tutoring System (WINDS) • Systems based on adaptive learning • customize their learning environments • flexible solutions that fit their real-time needs.
Theoretical Foundation and Background • Social Constructivism • From the point view of psychology • emphasizes the interplay between teachers, learners and tasks. • System was designed by social constructivist model • learners edit the learning content by their personal needs and experience.
Theoretical Foundation and Background • Flashcard • A flashcard is used as a learning tool. • In 1970, a German researcher, Sebastian Leitner, proposed the Leitner system, which uses flashcards efficiently. • sorts flashcards into groups depending on how well the learner knows each card. Correct-move to next group Wrong-stay in current group
Adaptive Learning and the Schedule-based Flashcard Concept • The proposed system, called the Chinese Word Learning System (CWLS), implements • Adaptive Learning theory • schedule-basedflashcard • The schedule-based flashcard • is used to display words for review.
Adaptive Learning and the Schedule-based Flashcard Concept • Logical Concept • The Chinese Word Learning System uses a simple adaptive logic • based on users’ familiarity with the specific word to produce the review schedule.
Implemented Learning Tool • Word Editor Tool • helps users organize their learning materials • Word Browser Tool • is part of the adaptive learning component. • helps users review the learning material.
Conclusion and Future work • CWLS • uses flashcard metaphor (scheduled-based review system) • applies adaptive learning theory to enhance the learning. • Implemented in web-form • enhance the quality of e-learning. (for desktop only) • In the future • Web-form for mobile device
