  1. Blog1: Sabarcodes.co.za Barcodes – What Are They? If you’re a shopaholic who loves to go to malls and shopping complexes to ease your stress, then you know all too well what a barcode is. The random lines, stamped onto the boxes of your products, about an inch wide and a centimetre and a half long, are the lines of the barcode. These lines are actually a clever representation of the digits from zero to nine, arranged in specific order and pattern that gives your product its unique identity. The reason these codes sit on your product’s box is because the seller needs to keep track of his inventory. Without these barcodes, it will be difficult for the seller to keep track of how much of which items he has sold. Barcode numbers are more important than they look, so don’t be fooled by their zebra-like appearance. Product barcodes have the capacity to hold as much data as they are designed to. A one-dimensional barcode will hold lesser information than a two-dimensional barcode. Barcodes hold all sorts of information in these patterns – consumer information, product information, batch number and manufacturing details, etc. It can be called as a complete collection of tags and details that the product has accumulated over its journey from scratch. Scanning techniques and information dissemination these days have made online barcode data possible – you can extract the details of your product by using your smartphones to scan the barcode and uploading the image on to a database dedicated to such details.
