  2. In the early 1990’s the number of American Indians in STEM fields was so miniscule that government and other national data publications were unable to show the data on annual graphs and charts.

  3. TCUP Award History • 2001 8 (7 TCU’s, 1 ANSI) • 2002 5 (3 TCUs, 2 NHSIs) • 2003 4 (3 TCU’s, 1 ANSI) • 2004 8 (5 TCU’s, 2 ANSIs, 1 NHSI) • 2005 (STEEP Program Added) 6(4TCUs, 1 ANSI, 1 NHSI) • 2006 (PHASE II Added) 7(7 TCUs) • 2007 3 (2 TCUs, 1 NHSI) • 2008 (Initiation Change) 5(4 TCUs, 1 ANSI) • 2009 5(5 TCUs) • 2010 (PEEC Added) 16(4 PEEC, 9 Initiation) • 2012 (ICE-T Change and TSIP, 6(2 ICE-T, 1 TSIP, 2 BPR, 1 RIA) BPR, RIA, Added)   • 2013 3 (2 ICE-T, 1 TSIP)

  4. 2011 New Added TCUP Funding Strands TSIPs: Targeted STEM Infusion Projects. Smaller Initiation projects, to 3 years, to $500,000. BEGIN FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES FOR RESEARCH BPRs: Broadening Participation Research in STEM. Support for research on new models and innovations in STEM teaching and learning. Up to 3 years, up to $300,000. RIAs: Research Initiation Awards. TCU faculty partner with institution such as center, national lab, or university. 2012 New CORE Funding Strand replaces RIA CORE: “Catalyzing Opportunities for Research and Education intended “for faculty members in STEM areas at TCUP-eligible institutions to pursue research locally or at an NSF-funded Center or other facility, a research-intensive institution, or a national laboratory. Awards are intended to help further the faculty member's research capability and effectiveness, to improve research and teaching at his or her home institution, and to involve undergraduate students in research experiences. -eligible institutions.”

  5. PLANNING PROJECTS: Non-renewable, $50,000 1 year (typically) To conduct institutional self-assessment & develop action plans to enhance STEM instruction IMPLEMENTATION – INITIATION – ICE-T PROJECTS: • Five years (generally) • $2,500,000 or less • Actively engages faculty members responsible for conducting proposed work COLLABORATIVE PARTNERSHIPS (2 or more NSF-TCUP Eligible Schools): Projects must build on existing TCUP effort or include strategies for strengthening STEM programming in institutions that do not have a NSF-TCUP award

  6. STEEP (Teachers of Excellence Education Projects): Supports development of baccalaureate degree programs in elementary or secondary education. Only institutions that have received a Phase I award are eligible to propose under STEEP. PEEC (Pre-Engineering Education Collaborative): All TCUP-eligible institutions may participate in PEEC, but each is limited to one PEEC project. I3 (Innovation Through Institutional Integration): Enables faculty, administrators, and others to think and act strategically about the creative integration of NSF-funded awards

  9. Broadening Participation: Moving From Capacity Building to Research Going Forward Strategies NSF can implement to help move TCUP institutions toward research? Strategies TCUP Institutions will need to implement to help move toward research? Several TCUP eligible institutions have never received a TCUP award. What about them? What strategies can both NSF and TCUP institutions implement to help these institutions? Majority of TCUP institutions still need “capacity building”.
