Pre-K Newsletter April 2013 Language Arts: This month in pre-k, we read several books about vehicles, including Freight Train, by Donald Crews and Airport, by Byron Barton. We also read two versions of “Jack and the Beanstalk” and Tops and Bottoms, by Janet Stevens. Our writing focused on retelling familiar stories and telling about things we can do. We read non-fiction books about recycling, seeds, and flowers. Social Studies: Our students are working on solving problems by using their words, waiting for a turn, and sharing. We worked together to create a very long beanstalk, adding pictures of the Giant and his castle. We learned about Paris, France, which was the destination of our plane trip. When we arrived, we planted a flower at the Garden of Versailles and made a pastry at a Parisian café. Science: We continue to experiment with colors, making predictions about what will happen when we mix them. We recycled food containers and paper rolls to create vehicles. We also learned about the parts of a flower and what plants need to grow. We talked about which vegetables grow above the ground and which vegetables grow below it. Math: We continue to create and read graphs. This month, we have focused on identifying which has less on the graph. We are also practicing counting to 20. We have used footprints to measure each other and continue to use a balance to compare the weight of various items. We are also practicing writing numerals. Field Trip Alert: Computer: This month we have focused on science, using the following websites: http://pbskids.org/sid/fablab_sortingbox.html http://pbskids.org/sid/fablab_vegetableharvest.html http://www.starfall.com/n/holiday/gardenshop/load.htm?f&n=main Field Trip to Strong Museum: Friday, May 17th We need many parent volunteers to go with us. We are taking both our morning and afternoon classes together. Please watch your child’s bookbag for more information!
