Prof Philip BoothInstitute of Economic Affairs “Since fox hunting became illegal, banker bashing has become a new blood sport. “Not only is the typical banker portrayed as being greedy, much of what he produces is said to be ‘socially useless’.”
“Banks are intrinsically social institutions. They make money by providing services that people want and which would be extraordinarily expensive to procure without banks.”
Banks and the Bible Does the Bible have anything to say about Banks? • Saving • Inheritance • Investing • Lending
Saving • Matt 6:19 Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. • Luke 12:21 The Rich Fool and his barns: This is how it will be with whoever stores up things for themselves but is not rich toward God.
Inheritance • 2 Cor 12:14 After all, children should not have to save up for their parents, but parents for their children. • Prov 13:22 A good person leaves an inheritance for their children’s children, but a sinner’s wealth is stored up for the righteous. • Prov 19:14 Houses and wealth are inherited from parents.
Investment • Eccles 11:2 Invest in seven ventures, yes, in eight; you do not know what disaster may come upon the land.
Lending • Deut 15:7-8 If anyone is poor among your fellow Israelites in any of the towns of the land the LORD your God is giving you, do not be hard-hearted or tight-fisted toward them. Rather, be open handed and freely lend them whatever they need. • Deut 23:20 You may charge a foreigner interest, but not a fellow Israelite
Parable of the talents His master replied, ‘You wicked, lazy servant! So you knew that I harvest where I have not sown and gather where I have not scattered seed? Well then, you should have put my money on deposit with the bankers, so that when I returned I would have received it back with interest.
Acts 6:1-4 During this time, as the disciples were increasing in numbers by leaps and bounds, hard feelings developed among the Greek-speaking believers—"Hellenists"—toward the Hebrew-speaking believers because their widows were being discriminated against in the daily food lines. So the Twelve called a meeting of the disciples. They said, "It wouldn't be right for us to abandon our responsibilities for preaching and teaching the Word of God to help with the care of the poor.
What is your role? • Financial Adviser? • Bible teacher? • Investment Manager? • Social Enterprise facilitator? • Accountant or solicitor? • Governance advisor? • Bank Manager? • Community leverage specialist?
One of the Seven? Acts 6:3-5 Brothers and sisters, choose seven men from among you who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will turn this responsibility over to them and will give our attention to prayer and the ministry of the word.” This proposal pleased the whole group. They chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit; also Philip, Procorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas from Antioch

Matt 28 v 19-20 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.
