GIS based Road Information & Management System A Decision Support Tool for Public Works Department, Maharashtra, India Ms. Bindu P.S. Member Technical Staff Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), A Scientific Society of Department of Information Technology, Government of India
Background • Objective • Facilitate Transportation Infrastructure Management • Motivation • Difficulty in archival of paper printed road maps • Data voluminous, non-uniform, and not up-to-date • Difficulty in information access
Approach • Solution Framework • Establish state-wide up-to-date digital database of roads • Information attachment to the spatial data layers • Information access through a GIS Interface
Methodology • Spatial Data Creation • Source : SOI Maps & Traditional Road maps of PWD • Digitization of spatial layers from the base maps • Collation of the data to a uniform scale and projection system • Updation of the road network through satellite imageries • Dynamic segmentation of roads at 1km interval
Methodology • Non-spatial Data Creation • Updation of the statistical registry pertaining to roads • Attribute information collection through data collection sheets • Transference of data to an electronic medium • Storage and maintenance in RDBMS
Implementation PWDWide Area Network
Implementation Data FlowArchitecture
Features • Application Overview • Data organized in views based on jurisdictional hierarchy • Maps are dynamically linked to the attribute database • Unique visualization and querying facility • Intuitive and user friendly interface with custom menus, tools and buttons
Utility • Asset Management Tool • 0.2 million km of road network across the state is captured • Eighty attributes are attached per km of the road • Decision Support Tool • Over forty customized queries with report generation capabilities
Usage A Query Instance : Minor bridges along the roads of Baramati Taluka
Usage Villages with population over 1500, connected to All-weather Roads
Usage Shortest Route connecting two locations with directions of travel route
Summary • Development of a GIS based Road Information and Management system • Successful implementation as an asset management and decision support tool • Facilitates Transportation Infrastructure Management for Public Works Department, Government of Maharashtra.
Conclusion • Scope of future work (Web enabling) • Replication of the same exercise for other States and Organizations
