Agenda • Introductions • What is UVote? • How does it work? • Look at example materials • Questions? • Contact info
What is UVote? • Non-partisan voter registration initiative • Aims to institutionalize voter registration on college campuses to reach more students andgenerate civic participation among young people • Provide information and materials to simplify the voter registration and absentee ballot request processes • Overcome barriers to student participation by processing and mailing forms, copying IDs, etc.
Why UVote? • On average, only about 30% of college students are registered to vote. • On average, UVoteincreases registration rates to about 80% • We can empower young people to begin a lifetime of civic engagement.
50-State Voter Registration: The Process • Step 1: Intake Form • Step 2: Voter Registration (VR) and/or Absentee Ballot Request (AB) forms. • Step 3: Copy of State ID or Passport • Step 4: Check for errors
Common questions about the intake form • Register at home or on campus? • Request an absentee ballot? • Do I have to register? • But I’m not 18!
State-by-State Issues • Colored sheets are intended as a guide • Beware of: • FL & TX: give them a packet & envelope to register themselves • MI, TN, LA: require in-person registration
Identification • Always make a copy if they have an ID with them • If no ID, generally, they will have to show ID at the polls. This varies by state. • State ID is preferable but if they only have a student ID, copy it!
More things to keep in mind • Don’t give away the last copy of a form from any state (make a copy first) • ALWAYS check the form for completion and accuracy (boxes checked, signature, D.O.B., county) • If you don’t know the answer—ask someone, look online, or encourage the student to do the research themselves. DON’T INVENT.
