Definition of Terms CAHC - complementary & alternative health care CAM -complementary & alternative medicine CAT - complementary & alternative therapies • Diagnosis, treatment and/ or prevention that complements mainstream medicine by contributing to a common whole, by satisfying a demand not met by conventional approaches or by diversifying the conceptual framework of medicine [Ernst].
CAT, CAHC, and CAM • Inclusive termsrelating to • products (e.g. herbal products) • practices (e.g. acupuncture) • practitioners (e.g. naturopathic doctors)

Snapshots • Current survey data re CAHC utilization does not adequately reflect our demographic profile. • Many people use CAHC with limited, inadequate or incorrect information. • Poor communication about CAHC between patients and conventional health care practitioners • Poor communication between conventional health care practitioners and CAHC practitioners
Jurisdictions • federal • a new regulatory framework for natural health products put in place January 1, 2004 • provincial & territorial • large variations across the country with respect to recognition of CAHC practitioners
