  2. The Heart Heart is a chambered muscular organ that pump blood received from the veins into the arteries, thereby maintaining the flow of the blood through the entire circulatory system. The heart is surrounded by membrane called Pericardium. Heart pumps more than about 14,000 liters of blood in a day, or 5 millions liters in a years. www.add15years.comwww.add15years.in

  3. Three Simple Heart Tests  1 ECG or EKG An electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG) is a test that checks how your heart is functioning by measuring the electrical activity of the heart. With eachheartbeat, an electrical impulse travels through your heart. This wave causes the muscle to squeeze and pump blood from the heart. • An ECG measures and records the electrical activity that passes through the heart.  • An ECG may be recommended if you are experiencing arrhythmia, chest pain, or palpitations and an abnormal ECG result can be a signal of several different heart conditions. www.add15years.comwww.add15years.in

  4. 2 Echocardiogram/Ultrasound of the heart An echocardiogram (echo) is a graphic outline of the heart's movement. During an echo test, ultrasound (high-frequency sound waves) from a hand-held wand placed on your chest provides pictures of the heart's valves and chambers and helps the sonographer evaluate the pumping action of the heart. Echo is often combined with Doppler ultrasound and color Doppler to evaluate blood flow across the heart's valves. • Assess the overall function of your heart • Follow the progress of valve disease over time • Evaluate the effectiveness of your medical or surgical treatments www.add15years.comwww.add15years.in

  5. 3 CT Angiogram A computed tomography angiogram (CT angiogram) is a test that uses X-rays to provide detailed pictures of the heart and the blood vessels that go to the heart, lung, brain, kidneys, head, neck, legs, and arms. • A CT angiogram can show narrowed or blocked areas of a blood vessel. • During a CT angiogram, you lie on a table that passes through a doughnut-shaped opening in the scanner. • If your doctor finds a major blockage in one of your blood vessels during a CT angiogram, you won't be able to get an immediate angioplasty to clear the blockage. www.add15years.comwww.add15years.in

  6. Unique facts about heart There are so many unique facts about our heart: 1. It is 100% muscle in shape of heart. 2. It can beat on its own outside the Body and that is how we can do heart transplant (heart keeps beating outside our body). 3. Heart rate and pumping action is controlled by the electrical switches (two electrical switches in the heart). 4. Every part of the heart is fully wired conducting electricity. www.add15years.comwww.add15years.in

  7. About ECG- why it is so important? • ECG is really very helpful when person is having chest pain or, We are suspecting- • Myocardial ischemia: Or MI or myocardial infarction or so-called heart attack. • An electrolyte disorder: ECG really helps us to tell if potassium is high or low (electrolytes). • Drug effect on the heart: Some of the ECG changes are very specific to drug toxicity (drug effect on the heart) also. It tells us about the hypertrophy or the thickening of the heart muscles which happen if you have a hypertension for many, many years. www.add15years.comwww.add15years.in

  8. Heart attack • A heart attack occurs when the flow of blood to the heart is blocked. • The blockage is most often a buildup of fat, cholesterol and other substances, which form a plaque in the arteries that feed the heart (coronary arteries). • Sometimes, a plaque can rupture and form a clot that blocks blood flow. www.add15years.comwww.add15years.in
