Garden Preparation • Encourage sites to explore gardening grant opportunities starting local and working their way out • Existing (you never know) • Local “Mom and Pop” hardware stores • Local Gardening Club Scholarships • National Gardening Grants (Home Depot, National Gardening Association).
Prepare Garden • Gardening area should be prepared before classes • Youth, teachers, and families should be involved • It doesn’t have to be overwhelming!
Collaboration • Work with schools to get participation with garden maintenance "Gardens are not made by sitting in the shade."...Rudyard Kipling
Collaborate • To work together, especially in a joint intellectual effort Team Up Work Together Join Forces Participate
Team Up • Contact 4-H and Master Gardener programs for possible involvement. • Team teaching opportunities. • Local Gardening Clubs may have volunteers. - Volunteers to help school with garden. • Make sure teacher is supportive of classroom responsibilities outside of EFTG lessons. -Gardening responsibilities.
Working Together • Encourage involvement of whole school and community. • Principals • Teachers and staff • Parent involvement • Community garden leaders
Join Forces • Teaching and encouraging garden maintenance. - Involve other grades • Before and after school groups • Parent volunteers and teachers over breaks • Turn into a community garden during the summer
Participate • EFTG requires participation from everyone involved outside of lessons for the curriculum to go well. • Email reminders for teachers to take kids out • Schools thinking a head for garden maintenance over breaks and summer • All year long!
