  2. Rules to FollowQuotations • - Type the quotation out EXACTLY the way it is written. Double check to ensure you have honored the writer’s words. • - You may not copy another person’s words and call them your own. If you do take words directly from the text, you must put those words in quotation marks and cite the author of the book where the quotation came from. (Failing to do so is plagiarism!)

  3. Rules to FollowReferring to Characters • - Do not refer to the character by her first name. • - You are not friends; you have never met; you must use the last name! • - If you are writing about characters with the same last name and your point will not be clear about whom you are writing, you may use the first name. • For Example: • Eleanor devoted herself to helping Franklin fulfill his dreams of becoming President of the United States. She refused to succumb to her mother-in-law’s demands.

  4. Rules to FollowArgument Writing • Keep yourself out of Argument Writing! • Original: • “I can’t believe Ederle swam for so long under those conditions.” • Revised: • “At the time, most people doubted that Ederle could swim for so long under those conditions.”

  5. Rules to FollowIntroducing Quotations • It’s simply not enough to introduce a quotation with: For example, . . . • (You need to explain what is happening. Help your reader. Then, you may add an appropriate transition.) • Original: • Gertrude Ederle of America’s Champion Swimmer was fearless. For example, Adler writes, “Trudy swam so fast that her trainer was afraid she would tire herself out. He ordered her to slow down. Trudy refused” (Adler 18). • Revised: • Gertrude Ederleof America’s Champion Swimmer was fearless. During Ederle’s first attempt at swimming the Channel, for example, “Trudy swam so fast that her trainer was afraid she would tire herself out. He ordered her to slow down. Trudy refused” (Adler 18). She defied the odds and followed her heart and not the sage advice of her trainer. She heeded no one’s warnings.
